2. If the diarrhea persists or the following are present

• Severe dehydration  5
• Persistent fever  2
• Bloody or mucoid stools  2
• Severe abdominal cramping or tenderness  2
• Signs of sepsis  2
• Immunocompromised status  5
• Symptoms lasting more than 7 to 10 days  5
• Age 70 years or older
• Blood leukocyte count 15,000 cells/mL or higher  7

 

evaluate with stool with cultures, specific testing(?), or stool multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay (or all 3)
